One of the things I most enjoy about my job is the range of tasks I’m faced with. As someone who can get easily bored with repetition, I find it rewarding that I’m able to continually push and extend my different skill sets through my work. Last week I was posting about sound design work I’d carried out for a client in Norfolk, England. This week I’m writing and composing a guitar solo for two separate clients – one in London and the other in the Orkney Islands. Next week I have lyrics to write!
Kathie Touin
I can’t yet talk about the London-based artist but the second guitar solo is for Kathie Touin, a Californian songwriter on whose third album I contributed some cool guitar parts to in 2009. She now lives way up north in the Orkney Islands off the coast of Scotland!
Variation
The two songs are wildly different so I’m having to put on different hats depending upon the song I’m working on. One being an 80s pastiche where I’ve busted out my whammy bar in an effort to produce something John Skyes-esque from 1987 era Whitesnake… and Kathie’s having an almost Middle Eastern feel. In fact upon hearing Kathie’s song, I immediately thought about this fantastic song by two of my heroes, Page & Plant.
A Guitar Solo You Can Listen To
Thankfully the deadline isn’t tight on either so I can take my time to produce something I’m truly happy with.
Unfortunately I cannot share either recording yet out of respect to the artists, but this post did remind me of some rockin’ guitar parts I contributed to an album I produced for French artist ‘In Case Of Emergency’ in 2016. Strong songs which thankfully called for some mildly technical guitar parts which as a guitarist, I was only too happy to provide. Due to time restraints I was never able to blog about this project but you can take a listen to the solos I wrote and recorded for that EP on the showreel below via my YouTube account.
